Anamaduwa police torture barber over false complaint

A 29-year-old barber has been illegally arrested, detained and tortured by Anamaduwa Police in March this year over a false complaint lodged against him, says the Asian Human Rights Commission.

The AHRC says Samayakkarage Ravi Nishantha was accused of stealing Rs. 30,000 which a friend of his lost while being taken to pay back a debt owed to a policeman.

The policeman in question had taken him to Anamaduwa police and together with other officers, severely tortured him, demanding the money.

Despite his repeated pleas that he was innocent, Nishantha was kept there for several hours before being freed.

The AHRC asks that letters be sent to the IGP, the attorney general, and the Human Rights and Police Commissions asking for an immediate investigation into the incident.

සමයක්කාරගේ රවී නිශාන්ත නම් වන ඔහු, පොලිස් නිලධාරියෙකුට ගෙවීමට තිබූ ණයක් ගෙවා දැමීම සඳහා ඔහුගේ යහළුවෙකු ගෙනයමින් තිබූ රු. 30,000ක මුදලක් සොරකම් කළ බවට අසත්‍ය චෝදනාවකට ලක්ව ඇත.


එම පොලිස් නිලධාරියා නිශාන්ත ආනමඩුව පොලිස් ස්ථානයට ගෙනගොස් තවත් පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් සමඟ එක්ව ඔහුට වදහිංසා පමුණුවමින් එම මුදල් දෙන ලෙසට කියා තිබේ.

තම නිර්දෝෂීභාවය දිගින් දිගටම ඔහු කියා ඇතත්, පැය කිහිපයක් ඔහු පොලිස් ස්ථානයේ රඳවාගෙන තබා ඇත.


මෙම සිද්ධිය සම්බන්ධයෙන් විමර්ශනයක් පවත්වන ලෙසට ඉල්ලා පොලිස්පතිවරයා, නීතිපතිවරයා සහ මානව හිමිකම් හා පොලිස් කොමිසමට ලිපි යවන්නැයි ආසියානු මානව හිමිකම් කොමිසම ඉල්ලා සිටී.
